Be careful what you are asking and praying for when it comes to this issue. I, Mike Sheley, fully believe that all of us who are Christians, following Jesus, should be metaphorical salt and light as he described it in Matthew 5.
However, we should all then expect to be treated by others the same way Jesus was treated. And if our middle schoolers are going to be salt and light, they too will have similar experiences. Some of Jesus’ toughest critics were religious people who didn’t understand why he was hanging around “those kinds of people”.
It could very well be that other Christians will be upset and frustrated with you, possibly even talking down about your middle schooler and you, because they are hanging around certain types of people. We have to pray for them and agree to disagree.
Jesus said it best: “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” (Matthew 9:9-13, NLT) and “The Son of Man (Jesus) came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:1-10, NLT)
