Rites of Passage Experiences

ROPE: Rites Of Passage Experiences Explained

Being a middle schooler can be difficult these days. Being the parent of a middler schooler can drive you crazy!  We know as parents many of you wonder what has happened to your child now that they are in middle. We know that connecting with your kids when they are teens can be a challenge and our student ministry wants to help you with that process of connecting. The relationship between you and your child can get better and we want to help.

We also know there are things that you really want to make sure your child “gets” before they head off to high school. The problem is, talking with your teen about important truths can feel awkward at times. Rather than waiting for your them to awkwardly approach you about difficult subjects, what if you were intentional about making it happen on the front end?

This year we are inviting you to block out time for a Rites of Passage Experience (ROPE) with your child. We believe this will help you build your relationship with your son or daughter and also provide you an opportunity to share with your child what you wish someone had shared with you. These experiences tackle difficult subjects in a practical way you can actually handle.

Please check out these rite of passage experiences, whether you will use them this year or next year.  If you have any questions, please email me, Mike Sheley: msheley@mpccministry.com

5th grade-Identity

Fifth graders still want your encouragement, but they will rarely ask for it. This is the year that teasing and gossiping take center stage, and with your child’s desire to “fit in,” it can lead to a compromise of values. These big shifts make it even more important for you to help your child see how they are designed differently, on purpose.

6th grade-It’s Time

It’s time. You knew it was coming, but you had no idea how fast it would actually get here. I am talking about the day when your sweet baby actually grew up and is now beginning the process of changing into a young adult.

It’s time. It’s not time for fear of the future but of daring to lead your preteen into this new phase of their life. We as parents can’t let them stumble their way through. We have the great privilege of sharing with them who they are at this moment and what they can become in the future.

It’s time. The time has come to ask the hard questions and to answer the harder ones with love and with truth. If our preteens can’t trust us to give them straight answers, who can they trust?

It’s time. It’s time to speak to our 6th graders, but mostly it’s time to listen. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 tells us that there is a time for everything. And now is your time to gently but truthfully lead your preteen into the wonderful journey of the Rites of Passage Experience.

7th Grade: Giving Your Blessing

Giving your teenager a Blessing will unleash them.  It will free them to take on the world with your approval.

The term Blessing can mean an unexpected gift, but it can also mean the invoking of favor on a person. The latter term is what we are describing in this eBook.

When you unleash your blessing, you unleash your teenager to change the world.

8th Grade: A Purity Weekend

Sex and purity conversations can be the hardest conversations to have with your teen, but they are also talks that can take your relationship to a new level.  Even though your 13-year-old may wince every time the s-e-x word comes up, they really do want to feel safe with you on this topic.  Even as an adult, you can still model purity for your teen in your media choices, language, and relationships with the opposite gender at work or in social settings.  We want to help you make sure these conversations are happening by setting you up to have a fun, (yes, fun), and powerful weekend with your 8th grader.
